As the leaves begin to change and the beauty of autumn surrounds us, join us for a relaxed morning of walking, conversation, and reflection in God’s creation. Together, we’ll enjoy the trails and natural beauty of Pine Grove Furnace State Park while taking time to slow down, connect with one another, and notice God’s presence in the world around us. Along the way, we’ll offer a few simple reflections and opportunities to pause, wonder, and appreciate the gift of creation.

This family-friendly event is open to all ages. Whether you come on your own, with colleagues, friends, or with family, you’re welcome to join us.

Our Meeting Place
We’re excited to have a wonderful group of about 30 people joining us! We will meet as a whole group at 9:30 a.m. at the Fuller Lake parking area at Pine Grove Furnace State Park.  https://www.pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/pine-grove-furnace-state-park
1100 Pine Grove Road, Gardners, PA 17324

We’ll begin with some quick introductions, prayer, and a group photo. By 10:00 a.m., everyone can choose how they would most enjoy spending the next couple of hours.

Choose the Morning That Is Right for You. There are several possibilities, depending upon your interests and energy level.

Enjoy Fuller Lake and the historic area. Fuller Lake is a beautiful place simply to slow down and enjoy the morning. Those who would prefer not to hike are welcome to remain near the lake, visit together, enjoy the sand and lakeside setting, or explore the nearby historic area and old iron furnace. If this sounds like your morning, consider bringing a folding or stadium chair.

Take an easier walk. There are gentle walking options near Fuller Lake and through the park. The Hiker Biker Trail is rated as an easy, family-friendly trail and passes Fuller Lake as it travels toward the Laurel Lake area. Portions are paved and portions are gravel. The Mountain Creek area also offers beautiful, wooded walking along the water. You can walk for as long as feels good and turn around whenever you are ready.

Looking for more of a challenge? Try Pole Steeple! Those who are comfortable with a much more strenuous hike may choose to drive to the Pole Steeple parking area near Laurel Lake. Pole Steeple Trail is approximately 0.75 mile each way; however, this is rated as the most difficult trail in this park. It is a steep climb with rocky terrain, and the overlook has exposed rock ledges and a significant drop. Adults should closely supervise children, particularly around the rocks and overlook.

There is no need to decide ahead of time which option you will choose. We can talk together when we arrive and help everyone find a way to enjoy the morning that fits them best.

What to Bring
Please come prepared for an October morning outdoors. We suggest bringing:

  • Water
  • Sturdy, comfortable walking or hiking shoes
  • Layers appropriate for changing fall temperatures
  • A rain jacket or poncho, depending on the forecast
  • Sunscreen and insect/tick repellent
  • A folding or stadium chair if you would enjoy sitting near the lake
  • A snack and lunch (these can remain in your vehicle while you walk).
  • A small backpack if you would like to carry water or other items with you

DCNR (Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources) recommends sturdy shoes, carrying water, staying on marked trails. Cell service can also be limited in portions of the park.

Coming Back Together
At approximately 12:00 p.m., we invite everyone to return to the Fuller Lake area. We’ll enjoy our packed lunches together, hear about the different adventures people chose, see a few Pole Steeple photos from those who made the climb, and spend some time reflecting on what we noticed during our morning in creation.

Our general schedule:
9:30 a.m. — Gather at Fuller Lake, introductions, prayer, and group photo
10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. — Walking, hiking, exploring, resting, and enjoying creation
12:00 p.m. — Return to Fuller Lake for lunch, conversation and reflection
